Raising Baby Salmon

As many of you know, we have been looking after baby salmon at the learning centre. We had 55 Chum salmon eggs arrive at the Learning Centre in late January. A month before spring break the eggs hatched and the alevin emerged! You will be happy to find out that the alevin have grown over the break and most of their yolk sacs have been used up.

The plan was to keep them for a few more weeks after they became fry, so that we could feed and observe them before releasing them in the Brunette River. Sadly, we had to change our plan. On Tuesday April 7th, we moved 43 little alevin from their dark and safe fish tank to a new home in Lower Hume Park.
